Neon, engine 1983 Metro 1.3 HLE :
1991:

Ive got myself a decent metro 1.3 HLE engine to put into my project, and have a few questions about it.
Still got loads of ody work to finish, but wanted an afternoon messing with the spanners.

The cooling system is confusing me at the minute, can i take the thermostat housing off a standard 998cc, or do I have to stick with the sandwich plate arragement.
Im wondering this, as in my haste ive snapped the little nozzle off (see photo). I cant remeber what this little nozzle led too, im presuming an expansion tank in the metro? Is this litle nozzle required on minis, could it be tig welded closed and forgotten about?

The other thing is the clutch salve cylinder, its connect to what Im led to believe is a clutch damper. Seen a similar one on minispares ( Clutch damper ). Minispares mention not to use it on a mini. Does it mean do not use with a mini slave cylinder or a mini master cylinder. I will be using the standard mini master cylinder, and more than likely the metro slave cylinder. Do I need to remove this damper or leave it in?

Finally, it has been noted that since im using the HLE engine, it has a set of economy drop gears. Wondered what peoples views on this arragemant is. As I would like it to drive like a normal mini. Would it be wise to remove these and add a standard mini set of drop gears (i have the standard 998 engine). I have read loads aobut this gearing, and understand why it is different in terms of ratio, but them i get bogged down and dont fully understand how this will effect final drive ratio etc etc. Sorry to waffle on.

Id be very helpful for any advice.

Just use ALL the cooling parts from the 998 engine - and the clutch parts too! And best just leave the drop gears alone - not worth tampering with them.

cheers,
just wondering why did the metro have a tricker cooling system?
Ill leave the drop gear issue for a while then, and just get it running first.

I think because of the front mount rad - it needed an expansion tank - and a filling point high up. Just drill out the hole on the head - and fit the heater valve there - the two little holes should already be threaded.

cool, cheers for that.
If i remember correctly the standard 998 engine that ive taken out has the heater valve inlne with one of the hoses, not off the LHS on the head itself.

Aye - but the hose will fit on the head!
