Been trawling through old topics but seem to be dragging up hundreds of irrelevant things! Might be missing the right topics or maybe the problem is that simple othe people don't need to ask!
But anyway, just noticed tonight that whenever i brake or slow down i can hear a high pitch whistling noise, a bit like a cross between a police siren and a firework!
A couple of weeks ago i had a slightly different noise. The only way i can describe it is like a high pitched wah-wah-wah-wahh-wahhh-wahhhhh-wahhhh
(I realise I sound like a complete loony but its hard to describe!!! )
Getting slower the more the car slowed. But that stopped and now i have just a constant whistle-like noise until i stop.
Boyfriend thinks my fan belt may be slightly loose so will check that out but just thought I'd ask the experts incase its something he hasn't thought of!
Any help would be reallyyyy appreciated! Thanks!
Rachael.

Sounds like pads too me, have you checked if theres a small amount of grease on the back of the pads, NOT the part that touches the discs but the part that touches the caliper piston?

But if they where the pads (as in need replacing) it would make more a GRRRR....GHRRRRRR grinding noise lol

Squeaky brakes are usually caused by the pads vibrating on the brake caliper pistons (I read somewhere cant remember where tho), I should know Im getting the same noise on mine I just havent got round to doing it yet

Maybe the servo is leaking...... not so sure if you would hear it in the car. Simple test. whilst stationary with the engine running. what do you get ?

is it a whistle or a squeak ?

It doesnt happen at all when stationary or accelerating. I checked the brake pads and they seem ok but will ask my boyfriend to try maybe greasing them on the back.
The only reason i think it may not be the breaks is that i tested whether it was the brakes by letting the car slow down without applying the brakes, and it still did it.
Not sure at what speed it starts though, will test when i nip out later. Don't think it does it til about 30mph, or maybe thats just because i can't hear it until then over the engine!

But then again, i cant hear the noise get louder as the engine gets quieter, its more like its starts at a certain speed quite loud, then gets quieter... if that makes any sense whatsoever!

Try coasting down a hill - with the engine switched off - does it do it then ?
