A bit embarrased to ask about this, but here I am, looking at my new, shiny ratchet type choke cable that I just got. Played with it a little bit, then I pulled the cable a little bit too far and I can't push it back in. So I pulled the whole cable out of the casing and tried to push it in again, but it won't go.

What can I do to put it back in?

This is truly a  moment....

Thanks,

Aria

Lightly oil or grease the inner cable, offer it up to the outer and twist it slowly in the direction of the grain of the wire strands as you insert the end, keep twisting in that one direction only and feed it through - make sure the outer is laid out straight/flat. If you rotate the inner cable "against the grain", so to speak, the ends of the strands will catch and possibly unravel.

sorry to hi-jack, but can ratchet choke cables be used to replace the twist&lock ones?

not directly as the mounting hole is a different shape, but a bit of bodging ( or a replacement switch facia ) could be done...

As for putting oil down it, the choke cable is not so bad, but under no circumstances do this with an accelerator cable, oil and grease collects dust which can cause a cable to stick, not clever on the accelerator...

Although interestingly enough I used to work for an OEM cable manufacturer and they greased every cable prior to insertion into the outer assembly - even ones using teflon liners.
