...i've just bought a british open classic which is fitted with a K&N air filter and stage one kit. Does anyone know how these modifications improve the car and how much it affects the insurance, baring in mind it is for a young, male driver.

I wouldn't tell the insurance, but thats just me, that would of course invalidate your insurance if they found out and is not recommended by me or anyone else :fear: May cost you a bit more on insurance if you notify them.

The k&n will be part fo the stage one kit, usually consists of an air filter, exhaust and possibly new needle for the carb. Should give the engine a few more bhp and make it more responsive and quicker on the road.

Just say you didn't know that it had a stage one kit you bought the car and the owner said that it was standard and any way it doesn't do a hell of a lot to the performance of the car so dont think about it

If you go with a company who accept modifications (Footman James and CIS are good for this) and insure young drivers, then declare it. Its much better to foot the slightly increased bill (mine went up by £3 at 18 after fitting a ST1 kit, it cost more for the admin!), than face the consequences of not being covered.
