but once removing it... I found out that the thread had been cut off and all that was underneath the green one was the post with no thread...

How can I go about fitting the new gear knob? its a "CLASSIC MINI 500 GEAR KNOB"

Thanks

Jason

The thread is considerably slimmer than the rest of the shaft, you would need to get the end waisted down on a lathe before you could thread it again. It's also far too short already, someone's cut loads off. Maybe as much as 4". That's fine if you like it like that I suppose but it's kind of the opposite of a quick shift! Personally I'd say your best bet is a new gearstick.

easier just to put a replacement gearstick in, will take all of two minutes....

I'm sure you'll be able to pick on up at bingley in the autojumble

(note to self, find all gearsticks and pack  )

by the way.... the thread is 5/16 UNC for a normal mini gear knob

Does anyone have a picture of a full length one in? so I can see what it looks like?

Here

Other option is to get a new shaft, cut a piece out, turn ends down to a taper and weld it back together again

Or you could consider a quickshift (shortshift) while you are at it and replace the lot? And before the thread decends into an arguement about how good or bad they are lets just leave it at this. We are presenting the OP with all his options!

I most certainly want to get rid of that frog thing... wonder if anyone would buy it if I stuck it on Fleabay! lol

thanks

Jason
