i have an rc40 style exhaust, 2" bore throughtout and single box.
i dont think its too loud just to run, but when you give it some stick it starts to get quite loud

got the dB monitor on my iphone and measured it at 70dB or around that, so not much more than pulling and empty wheelie bin down a bumpy street
that was on tickover after warming up about 5 foot away

on a saloon aswell, so would imagine its a bit quiter with that extra bit of pipe in there
also, they do a small box thats just like a wider bit of pipe in the centre which is smaller than a propper box but works as a bit of a silencer,
i saw them on ebay

I don't think they make an RC40 for the estate do they?

If they do though, it's not all that loud as a single box exhaust. I used to run mine as single box for just the same reason for a while.

Ive got it on my 1098 mini moke, so i hear it quite clearly when under load or at higher rpm..
when you get two walls or a street of houses each side, and you put the engine under load it really can sound very loud, but in general it's not to bad.

It's just occurred to me that as your car is an estate it may be riding too low at the back. What wheel and tyre size are you using? Is the rear suspension original?

Replied on CER to say I run a twin box RC40 on an estate with no problems. Check it's mounted as high as possible and as Dan says above check your suspension is in good condition.
