Hi guys, need to change a few panels on my mini and was going to buy a welder but not sure what to buy, im a complete novice but will get a little help from the net and books and alot of scrap metal before i touch my car.

I have been down to machine mart and there are mig / tig / arc and i really dont have a clue what one to go for.
Can anyone help with choosing a good welder that will not cost a fortune and any tips will be great.
thanks
pete

Yep, MIG is the one. I have a gasless and, whilst it doesn't give as clean a finish as gas it does mean I can weld outdoors without the worry of shield gases being blown away.

Gas mig 130 turbo is probly the one to go for, but don't go any lower on the ampage. Can always run gasless wire thru it if you want.

Avoid SIP at all costs.

Best to get a good quality second hand one than a cheap new one

130 is best all-rounder. Any less, and it'll struggle with anything more than bodywork steel, any more and it starts getting expensive.

depends what else you want to do with it, bodwork is pretty thin on a mini, so you could manage with a 100 amp.

I've got a Clarke 135, works a treat.

Done most of my welding with a Clarke 135TE

I started as a complete noob as well but soon got reasonable at it by making obscure sculptures out of whatever steel was lying around!

Tried doing the same with my dad's TIG set and I sucked. So much.

I have just bought a kempi 150 unit. I love it but it is a little on the expensive side.
