Hey guys,

I just read this post which which claims that the Haynes manual torque setting of 18Lb ft. for the pressure-plate-to-flywheel bolts is wrong and that it should be 40-45 Lb ft: http://www.theminifo...showtopic=60705

I've set my torque wrench to this new figure after replacing my clutch plate, and am tightening up the bolts, and i'm getting very nervous about taking them all the way up to that torque.... I feel like i have a pretty good sense of how much torque is appropriate, and right now it just feels like too much. I'm up to about 30 Lb. ft. and have applied threadlock to the bolts - should I keep going? Terrified of stripping one of these bad boys.... Could someone confirm for me that i really do need to take them all the way up to 40 Lb ft.?

Seems like you are going too far. What thread size are they ? Wise to stop!

I think the confusion is between the pressure plate and flywheel hub on the Verto.

I was going to suggest 25 ft lbf, if they are 5/16" thread - which from memory I think they are ?

Lol, yeah, this doesn't feel right... when you've sheared as many bolts as i have you develop a sense for this stuff. I guess I'll just stop at 30. Is that post i linked talking about a different pressure plate with larger bolts? Strange, mine is a verto type...

The linked faq is about the bolts that attach the flywheel proper to the hub that attaches it to the crankshaft's tapered end. Thanks for mentioning it, I've stuck a note on to avoid further confusion. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the bolts or at least undo and retorque them.

As said, that guides for torqueing the pressure plate to the boss for the crankshaft, to torque the bolts to the flywheel use the specified torque in the haynes.

I will admit that perhaps I did not make it fully clear :-

18lbft for the bolts that fix the clutch assembly to the flywheel and 45lbft for the bolts that fix the center section to the clutch (the bit that bolts to the crank shaft)

The topic arose as clutch failures due to loose or sheared bolts of the center section as a direct result of tightening those bolts to 18lbft rather than the correct 44lbft. It is this torque value that is un documented in any workshop manual, but does look like it is included in new clutch kits (AP kits at least).

The outer perimeter bolts are still 18lbft

Since 2007 when I posted that topic, I have not heard of many failures, whether this was a coincidence or not, it doesn't really matter :errr:

Ok, thanks for the clarification guys, I have re-torqued the bolts, none of the treads seem to be damaged. It's probably my fault for not understanding the terminology correctly.

I understand the issue regarding the torque settings for the Flywheel hub, they are high but they are 10.9 bolts, very high tensile.

My problem is much more mundane, I am trying to remove the existing bolts, but I can not hold the clutch and undo the bolts, they are incredibly tight, any ideas?

Never had an issue. Work across the center. Or clamp it to something.

While fitted to the Crank, you don't normally need to undo these and unlikely that you'll succeed. The Bolts are staked (or should be) so the nus can't come off. If you are trying to remove the flywheel, you first need to undo the BIG bolt in the centre, remove the 'keyplate', then fit a flywheel puller to get it off.
