Mini Cooper Rover 1.3i
1995

Recently my 95 Rover began to make a loud beeping noise. It's the kind of noise that is made when the key is first turned, and the check engine / oil light come on prior to starting the ignition. I discovered that the only way to stop the beeping is to turn the Air Conditioning and blower on and leave them on. If I turn off either the blower or the AC, the beeping resumes as a steady high pitch sound or beeps intermittenly. I have checked all the fuses and see no obvious wire shorts. Has any one else experienced this issue, or have any ideas of what to check? Any assistance is much appreciated. Thank you.

Do you know if the Japanese AC system uses a trinary safety switch or seperate switches?

To my knowledge the beeping and warning lights are part of the cat warning on the Japan spec models and not related to the AC.

-Thanks for your reply Dan. I'm not sure...the AC switches are "horizontal wheels" and located to the upper left of the stereo head unit. They appear to be wired separately from the hazards and the rest of the switch array. I haven't attempted to see which fuse they are on. Does this help? I'm not sure what you mean by "cat warning", catalytic converter warning? Do you know how to test if that's issue? Thanks.

The switches I mean are not the control switches but are safety switches that are part of the AC system, monitoring the pressure and temperature inside the system. I don't know if the system in a Mini uses a single, trinary swtich that monitors the whole system or the more old-fashioned type where a seperate switch monitors each function. Given that the beeping stops when either the compressor or blower are on I'd suggest that something to do with either a pressure or temperature switch is causing it. Is the condensor fan in the engine compartment running as it should?

Japan spec cars have a warning system that monitors the catalyst, that's what gives you warning lamps and sounds that most Minis we deal with on the forum don't have. Some of our members do have Japan spec Minis and will be more able to help you than others.

Hi,

I have not been able to find any info on the A/C nor the Catalytic buzzer on pre 1996 models (I have a 1994 and need them too) even from the HMC manuals. The attached PDF's are for the 1997 model and might shed some light.

Here is the buzzer function on page 45 of the PDF:

http://www.theminifo...x...st&id=68242

Page 24 of the same PDF shows the earth point locations on the vehicle.

The A/C and the buzzer circuit diagrams are shown on pages 23 and 24 of the PDF:

http://www.theminifo...x...st&id=68240

The only things that seem common between the buzzer and the A/C condensor are the earth points C556-1. Maybe they need cleaning. Or there really is a problem with the catalytic?

Hope that helps,

Ivan

Ok, thanks again Dan, that makes more sense. Yes, the condensor fan is running properly. Hopefully I will find someone familiar with Japan specs.

I had this buzzer problem not too long ago, though it wasn't related to the A/C at all. As I understand, this buzzer is a Cat overheat warning. My HT leads were not in great shape anymore, and sometimes in rainy conditions one of them would fail and the car would run on 3 cylinders. After a few second of this at speeds over 30 mph, the buzzer would start, and it would not stop until I pulled over and slowed down.

I don't see how this could be related to your A/C, maybe just a coincidence, or perhaps a short-circuit or bad earth?
