Normally a stout screwdriver in the flywheel teeth and a big breaker bar and socket on the pulley nut does the trick. I take it you have knocked the tab washer back?

Maybe you could try drowning the nut in penetrating spray and leaving it to soak overnight then try again tomorrow. Unless you have already done that.

Hi,
You are doing everything right - I use a short piece of 3mm wall steel tube slit in half (so it's a kind of letter C) in the flywheel teeth to spread the load a bit when jamming the flywheel. It's a normal right hand thread on the bolt (anticlock to undo), but the only other extra is that I give the end of the long bar a good whack with a 4 pound Rawhide mallet once it's loaded, to shock it loose. I assume you are also replacing the seal in the cover as well as the gasket. I always put the pulley back through the seal hole and onto the crank before I tighten any of the small bolts to nip the gasket - it centralises everything so the seal is not strained.

Don't try this at home kids.. But it does work

If the engine is in the car and the engine runs.

Put a socket on the crank bolt, use a breaker bar or t bar and turn socket clockwise so the bar is tight against something solid.
disconnect the coil. Then give the ignition key a flick so the starter trys to turn the engine.
Because the socket can't move the force of the engine undoes the bolt.

I've used this method on mini's and Landrovers works a treat.

Although I've now got a compressor and impact gun so don't need use this method anymore
