I was browsing fleabay and cam across a Mini rolling on 13x7 Star Mags and noticed it had standard arches. They were the regular old black plastic arches that aren't any more than an inch or so wide. This left a little bit of the tire extending past the arches. Is this legal? Just wondering cause I actually like how it looked.

It's a bit subjective, the arches should cover the tread of the tyres.

Bungle, I read the thread and there is some good stuff on there. I agree with that Dave guy, but at the end the thread kind of put me back to the start. Is it legal or not? My gut is telling me to just do it and run whatever arch I want, cause the guys on that thread are saying it will get through an MOT that way. That and I only have 2 more years left here and back in the states I won't have too much of a problem related to arch width. It is a really big gray area in the US as well. More so than here since every State has it's own laws, like the South don't have inspections (like your guys MOT) and in Colorado your not required to run a bonnet. It varies greatly, like in Kentucky (when I was stationed at Fort Knox) I used to see lowriders with little 13" spokes that were mounted with spacers, they would stick out at least 4 inches past the arch of the wheel well.

I really like the look (I hope the guy don't mind me using his Mini as an example)

The IVA test Manual is a good place to look for info, there's a link in the pinned topic here.

I think you would be forever arguing the toss with keen Coppers & MoT testers anyway.

i always wondered about cars like that,

hotrods hardly ever have arches fitted, do these get round it being an older car? or are they just taking the risk also?

As far as I can remember I believe the law was at least a third of the tyre viewed from above should be covered.

The Law always used to be up to a third of the tyre could show outside the arches but that was changed a few years ago & now you are only allowed just the side wall showing & still some of the lovelly boys in blue will complain about that. Spenner used to run 7x13 starmags on his mini with standard plastic arches but his car was on standard drums all round so didn't stick out as wide. Now he has discs & spacer drums he uses group5.

That was a really rubbish way to explain things, so here’s what I was trying to say. The tyre tread should be completely covered around at least a third around the circumference of the wheel when viewed from above.
