I have a 1991 Cooper, not very mechanically minded so wonder if anyone could help me. I came to my mini at break time and there was oil running all the way down the road. I moved it and i could see it was deffinitely from mine. I checked the oil level with the dipstick and its on the Max line. Where else could it be coming from? what else could i check?

Cheers, James.

Could be anywhere really, main thing to find out is weather its coming from the upper part or lower part of the engine. If theres no visable signs of oil on the block when looking at it from infront of the car then its going to be underneath (most of the time it is anyway). It may be your driveshaft oil seals or gear selector seal, these are the most common for leaks.

Yeah its from underneath, seems to be a very fine oil, that comes in waves...stops then absolutely wees out!

James.

Is it the ignition coil? That's full of oil that doesn't resemble motor oil.. more viscous.

Ask me how I know - my coil just EXPLODED yesterday. Never seen that happen before.

If you'r not loosing any oil, check that's it's not water and antifreeze mix. Depending on the colour of the antifreeze and how "clean" it is, it can be mistaken for oil when you see it on the ground.

You really DO need to find out what it is - and where it's coming from!
