OK, I know very little about what I am talking about so bear with me.
I lost the keys to my car, so I removed the box bit that goes over the steering column(?) and then I removed the back part of the ignition switch (the part with all the wires hanging out), but I can't seem to get the part where you actually put the key in off? Does that thing even come out? Sorry about my crappy terminology.

Does the switch look like the one pictured below? The ignition switch is part of the whole steering lock assembly, and haynes says the column has to be removed from the car to get this piece out, but i don't see why.

Has yours got hte heads of the shear bolts still remaining? Undo these to release the clamp

The ignition barrel is attached with 2 sheer bolts meaning the heads snap off when they are tightened so they cannot be easily removed by a thief etc.

Your only option is to drill/cut them out.

Are you trying to remove the barrel itself?

It looks pretty much the same as that. The heads to the bolts have snapped off. If I drill the bolts out, will I be able to get the part where you put the key off? Or do I have to buy a whole new clamp thing?

The whole thing has to be replaced. It's not serviceable, you can't buy just a lock barrel and key or just an ignition switch. The new lock assembly will come with new shear bolts.

Steering lock or ignition switch probably. 1976 - 1996, Mk4 to MPi. Only Mini 25s had a different and specific ignition switch in that period, although I've yet to discover what the difference is. Part number BHM7107.

Cheers, Dan. That thing is like £80 :o
I'm gonna drill it off, send it to this dude I found who reckons he can cut me a new key for £7.50.
While I'm here, anyone got a good way of getting the petrol cap off without blowing myself up?
Thanks, doodz.

You will probably have to force the lock and buy a new cap. Be careful not to damage the tank neck or a new cap will never seal to it.

I've had the exact same problem with my Mini city 1984, everywhere online seems to have discontinued the item BHM7107!

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Would doing what Harry says and forcing the barrel out or whatever work? (sorry i'm a girl with little knowledge of cars)
and just send the barrel off to one of the companies that would be able to make a key for it?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated !!
Thank you !!
