hi , currently putting together the inside of my 1979 clubman estate. i have noticed that the car has not got rear seat belts. i would like to know if i can still use these rear seat belts and not get in trouble by the police? what are the legal requirements about this ? , and if it is illegal . can i buy a after market seat belt to suit.

thanks
ash

If the car is pre April 1981 rear belts are not required by law.

Odd phrase, the 'Police can not do anything'. Why would they do anything? Do you feel they are out to get you? :)

You can't carry a child, anyone who legally requires a child or booster seat has to have a seatbelt. Other than that, if the car was built before rear seatbelts became a legal requirement then you may use it without them.

I thought it was more like pre 1987, because that was the year Minis got fitted with lap type seat belts as standard?

If you want to add rear seatbelts, I saw a Clubby Estate at Stanford Hall show last year with a set fitted - it looked pretty well done from what I could see - here's the photo I took:

I was just thinking of fitting lap belts to my Estate, but that looks like a nice stong mount, i might have to look into that
