Right,

Im about to start stripping an engine that was removed from my 1990 mini cooper. I will be re building it to my own spec however im interested to know whats what with the engine now. Ive had 1275s before but when this was in the road it felt quite nippy. Im aware as this was a cooper it should of had an A+ engine in. How can I confirm this? Also is there any ways I can tell what cam is in it? Weather the engine has been bored out and any head mods. Also what final drive it has.

Any help would be great

Go on guessworks' engine identifier on his website, put in the engine code and it will tell you what it was when it left the factory. Then when you have taken the head off you can measure the bores and work out the capacity. On the camshaft, when you have stripped the engine, you will probably find a stamp which will either have a BMC/rover code or something like 276, which will tell you the duration of the cam. Head mods are found simply by looking at it really. Measure the valve sizes when it is off, then refer to charts and tables on the internet for your cylinder head casting number.
