you have either slipped a cog or the bit that holds the glass has rusted away

you need to remove the door card and with draw the winder mechanism for a look

it's all the the haynes with pictures :o

Mine has done it but luckily the door is off , its could be what has already been mentioned or the glass is not sitting on the rubber or on the winder mechanism properly.

I bet the glass regulator channels (or whatever their called) have rusted away and collapsed.

And mine... I found that if I tapped the bottom of the door it sounded like there was rust scale moving inside. Because the rusty bits fall to the bottom! Are the doorskins themsleves ok? Or bubbly? If they have some rust on too then its more likely the car has some rust inside :)

Same problem with mine on the drivers door, was a right pain in the backside, the runner channels holding the glass had rusted away, after a bit of fettling and filing and squeezing the runners onto the glass with some pliers it seems to be holding! Not the best design, but quite a common fault

I had this problem few weeks back,

In the end it was caused by a bent tooth on the cogs and the rail slighty bent, i took it all appart got all the rust off, greased it all up, bent it all back, painted the outside of the runners to prevent futher rusting and now its working really smooth :)

Its all in the haynes, its not a hard job... my advice would be to get somone to hold the window tho while you are taking it appart :)

the arms on the window mechanism bent on myn and became wrong length.

If it is the regulator channels or rails which have rusted away, then you just need these: -

this kind of thing always happens at night :P

thats why i went for the no glass, no door system. it gets rid of little problems like this

on a serious note: if you cant get someone to hold the window for you, get a couple of bits of wood, put the window right up(with your hand if needs be). push the wood through the holes in the door and this should hold it safely while you work on the mechanism.

Also grease up the new regulator channel/rails so they don't rust out again any time soon. Grease the winder mechanism too and whilst you're at it, you could spray some Waxoyl into the door bottom. That should keep it rust free and you'll be killing two birds with one stone at the same time.
