While sliding the jet in and out of the jet bearing (as using the choke would do), it's very notchy and not at all smooth. Does it need greasing? Or is it worn out?
The HS4 that i took off is as smooth as my bum when sliding it in and out :saywhat:
The only trouble is, the jet bearing isn't listed on the burlen website :gasp:
Oh, and how do burlen determine what carb is left or right? would it be from sitting in the drivers seat like when you order panels? The jets on each carb are different, one with a green band and one with a red, i've screwed up the green one.

I think jets are the same all round and can go on either way.... dont quote me on that. The best bet will be to ring them up and ask about the things, if its notchy i would replace it myself.

Undo the choke links on the carb and work the jet by hand. I found the problem on my carbs was with the bends in the links creating "binding" and not with the jet nut or jet tube itself. Yours may be similar and if so, some experimenting and careful straightening and reorienting of the links on the carb may resolve the problem.

That sounds about right fella, it's happening on both of them but when i push it in and out by hand, providing i keep it straight, it's pretty smooth. What do you mean by links? The piece that screws and attaches to the bottom of the jet is like an arm, this then attaches to what i suppose i would call a link in the main body of the carb, is this what you mean as i don't see what i can adjust or straighten?
Either way it's pretty far off as although it'll pull out, the spring that's supposed to push it back in just doesn't stand a chance...i have to force it back in by hand!
cheers fella!
jackman - i think i'll need to ring them to confirm it, but i know they're different as i've had them next to each other.

Jet bearings are available, there's four different ones for HS carbs so I can't give you a part number without your carb tag number or some other identifying marks.
They are different left and right, the angle between the fuel line and the linkage is reversed side to side.
Carbs are identified as left or right as if sitting in the drivers seat.

The screwed on part is what I'm calling a link. I didn't see "proper" adjustments on it either. I just experimented with its shape until the binding nearly disappeared. It made my choke operate smoothly. Perhaps a jet bearing would help the problem. If they aren't expensive... give it a try. I just like tinkering and found re-shaping the link fixed my problem.

Okay fellas that's excellent. I'll try adjusting but if it doesn't work i'll get that number and ring them up to see what their view on it is. I know they're old so it wouldn't surprise me if the bearing is worn. I've replaced almost everything else, costing me a fortune these carbs and i still need a proper inlet manifold!
Once i get in the garage i'll get this number off the carbs and it'll make my life easier! I find a part number on loads of the bits and just thought it was another singular part number so ignored it!
cheers!
