hi all, i have a massive problem with torque steer on my mini, basically whenever i put my foot flat to the floor in 1st or second, it pulls about all over the road! When driving normally at about 60 it stays perfectly straight, and doest pull to one side, its just when i put the power down!

I was just reading on minispares about their crosspin diff, and they say that it reduces torque steer, so if thats tre,
can fit one without having to pull the engine out? Id go lsd but theres no way i can afford one at the mo..

Also its a 1293 with a 256 cam, 1.5 rockers, stage 4 head, its got fixed -1.5° bottom arms, heavy duty adjustable tiebars, all polybushed, spax shockabsorbers.

A thought that popped into my head was that it could be something to do with he tracking or caster, but it drives straight at a constant speed and feels good in corners.

So any ideas how i can minimize it, its a bit scary in the wet..... Thanks

Increase the Castor. With a 256 cam it shouldn't have anywhere near enough power to torque steer!

what should i set the castor to? At least i was told it had a 256 in when i bought it, althoug it idles quite lumpily, and i cant get it to idle nicely, so it may be a hotter cam, im not sure though, lol

Has it all been setup properly?

Mine torque steers a bit, the more toe out on mine, seems to cause make it worse.

somthings amiss i would look at all your suspension and steering components for wear then get the car suspension and steering set up properly

If later than 1976 then you will also need to look at subframe mountings...... bent tie bars, loose wheel bearing/hub assemblies will cause "vageness"

If you wamt to reduce torque steer to a minimum and you do have the power..... then fit heavy duty rose jointed bottom arms and tiebars :)

Just wort pointing out that the cross pin diff will make zero differance to a normal open diff, no matter what Mini sport say.

What wheels are you running?

Try about 3 degrees castor with zero toe-in as a start.
It should not torque-steer much with your engine spec. However, if you have too much neg camber that wouldn't help and if your tyre pressures are a bit high with lots of neg camber that would make it worse.
Is the sub-frame solidly mounted?

the subbys solid mounted, but only on the floor and towers, poly teardrops, to be honest i think the engines a higherspec than i was told, it goes better than my 1330 and that was pushing 85bhp

have been a very busy boy today, i got to do the wheel alignment at my mates garage today, the castor angle was different each side, so its now set to +3°, the tracking had about a 6mm toeout, its now got 3mm toe in, and we had the head off today, just as i was so curious to confirm the engine spec, its got +60" pistons, so its 1330, pretty big rimflo valves, and we worked the compreesion out to be 11.5 to 1, lol, i was told it was a 1293 when i bought it, lol, im dying to find out what cams in it now, but im not planning on pulling the engine out, i do know its got vernier gears though.
Now that the fronts all set up, it has a lot less torque steer, its still pulls to the right a tiny bit when you plant it, but it feels a lot safer now, lol

you could whip the rocker cover off and see what the lift is at the valves,

chances are you can get a rough idea from that.
