Got the hubs off the car at the moment and im doing the balljoints i have shimed all seem good but i was wondering how tight the domed nut needs to be so i can flip the edges up on the locking washer any ideas? i have a 38mm spanner big old thing and i have cranked it over by hand is this enough?

Needs to be ideally 75lbf ft or 102 Nm done up

I know your just shimming up but are you using genuine ball joints on there, too many problems with non genuine ones :D

If you've had no problems with yours then there no reason to change and keep on re-shimming, If you want a new set then I recommend you get ball joints from minispares CLICKY. you can also try MRA CLICKY grease nipples are included on the MRA ones

as i have no socket to use the torque wrench on it do you think a foot long hefty 38mm spanner cranked over by a beefy guy would sufice:)

Problem with ball joints is you need to shim them and go through the trial and error method with the right shims before you torque them up for good and flatten the tabs, so you wont know by hand your hitting the right note?

Don't know how you've been doing it up until now (maybe your method has worked so far) but really you do need a torque wrench and the big arse socket to fit over the dome nut?

I got mine from minispares CLICKY as I wasn't sure if halfords had enough imperial stuff there?

Its the 1 1/2 inch or 38mm incase you do find one, but make sure its about 3 inchies or 80mm in depth, otherwise you wont be able to fit the torque wrench over it as the end of the pin (thread section) will hit. I'd imagine at this size they would be quite deep anyway?

Its best to use the proper torque, the ball cup can crack if you overtighten the nut.

1.5" Ball Joint socket - should be available from Halfords.

Note - it is NOT 38mm - an accurate 38mm socket may not fit.
