Hello all,

I have decided to replace my 1275 in my 1986 City E, with the original modified 998 (c. 65hp) for something to do. I want to get the similar type of output as the 1275 (c. 80-85bhp) so have decided to go for the turbo option.

1) My research has found that a T2 Garrett turbo from a R5GT is best for the A series with Mirage manifolds etc. Is there anything smaller or newer technology that will work better to reduce lag as I suspect I won't need much boost as I am going for moderate power gains.

2) I currently use a Megajolt for ignition and would like to go full EFI on the new build. Am I insame, will this be too much for a hobby mechanic (I'm do have an Engineering Masters Degree for what its worth)

3) Should I consider a supercharger instead?

4) Is a Plenum chnager necessary (I would guess so with the injection requirment)

Thanks

Matt

With regards to turbo choice, I'd very seriously look into the garret GT1752, it's a small ball bearing turbo, with far far less lag than a T3, and I'd imagine less than a t2.

As far as injecting it goes, I think to do it properly you'd need to use something like megasquirt ms2 with the siamesed code.

take a look on turbominis, there's a LOAD of info over there about 998 turbo's and EFI.

The GT1752 is actually a journal bearing turbo. It is just of much more modern design that the old T series.

I had a look at the miniturbos site, its like an encyclopaedia on turbo minis.

The boss is at a meeting so I know what I'm doing instead of work for the rest of the day:)

The GT17 is no use for a moderatley powered 998. It's boost threshold is only marginally better than a Metro T3 on a 998. The T2 is a far better choice.

I'm currently building a 998 with an IHI RHF4, on paper very similar to the T2, but slightly more efficient.

Other opions are GT15s either 44 or 48, not been tried on a 998 as far as I know.

You would be wise to listen to Wil.

Him and his brother are the small bore turbo guru's IMHO.
