I think the subframe issue is down to Rover squeezing a bit of a crumple zone in to the MPI shells 175/50/13's will fit any Mini, the radius arms are the limiter. I don't think oil is such a critical issue, as long as there is some 'n it's changed occasionally. Rover will have changed the spec as oil technology improved to help with warm up fuel economy and emissions. You may get longer box 'n engine life out of 20/50 but not enough of a difference to bother Rover's warranty commitments.
