Bodge
and the problem with using 'gasket goo' as you so rightly put it is it covers the oil feed holes to the bush, so later on you're going to be rebushing the end covers...
The odds on finding a diff cover which matches exactly are long, if you have 40 or 50 cases to chose from then you may find 1 or two which are a 'good' match, personally if a diff cover or case are broken then it's not worth the storage space and is better being weighed in as scrap, as that is essentially what it is...
I've even had customers send me gearboxes with mismatched cases, their choice is, use their original case and there's no warranty, or re-case the box.

You used the correct term...

With those boxes and covers becoming less easily available as time passes, it would be straightforward to lightly skim the end faces to ensure compatibility, but when presented with a leaking end cover seal on an installed engine, a 'bodge' is the only answer. It gives a bit more time before the whole lot will be coming out for re-furb. I just hate having to do jobs like that, as I'm sure you do.
