Suffolk police now have meters to check noise levels. Over 82db and it's £30 fine. Persistant offenders up to £500.

www.buryfreepress.co.uk Fri Feb 19th pg 31

Rest assured if your local force don't have them they soon will!

What! There's got to be quite a few production cars that won't pass that test...

Edit: From good old wikipedia, traffic on a busy roadway at 10m is 80-90 dB

i thought there wasnt actually a noise limit and it was down to the MOT and police's discretion? surely things like subaru's and evos will be over the limit as standard?

You're reading the artilce wrong, this quote is from the Bury Free Press website;

Police say a meter reading of more than 82 decibels would prove an exhaust had been modified. Drivers who break the law could face a £30 fine, while repeat offenders could be prosecuted and fined up to £500.

The article does not say that modifying the exhaust, or having a meter reading over 82 decibels is breaking the law.
The article does say that breaking the law will result in a fine, but doesn't say what law.

I think the law is aimed at boy racers revving their engines and racing round town, rather then the sensible drivers amongst us.

Lesgislation on this is not exactly great. For motorcycles, its a set decibel limit. For cars it is set at "what is average for that vehicle" given the condition of the silencers, and that the noise is unreasonable above the level expected by a similar vehicle. (i.e. a standard one)

This is open to a degree of interpretation, but they could rightly say that any non standard systems could in theory fall into that bracket. As long as its not stupidly loud, and you aren't driving like a nut case, its unlikely that you will get pulled up on it. I only know of one such exhaust noise checking device in North London, clever devices, but not the easiest thing to have to set up at the roadside.

OK, traffic cops have ha DB meters for years

1. for motorbike (I have a KTM) Akro pipe no baffles) and its friggin loud its well over the 95Dm but never had prblems with the fuzz,

2. they wont even pull you over in the car, unless the scaffold pole you got fitted is making the old folks fall over or grab a tree in the street, and small children wee themselves :P

You might have problem when it's MOT time, new rulings came in last year, click the link and read part 2b marked with a vertical line, these are the new rulings regarding noise from exhausts, everyone who fitted a loud exhaust for the simple reason that it's loud can be blamed for this arriving, one of the most common complaints against modified cars is that they are too loud.
