Hey all

Thought I would tell you what I am doing, I am in the 1st stages of converting my 1.3i to a turbo carb engine

Thought I would start this thread up, as I have now collected 90% of the parts I need and the rest will only be brought after I fit the 1st lot so I know space left in the engine bay

It will be running it at low boost as I am at 1st keeping the spi's internals. Here are the main things I will be changing over:
Metro turbo head
Adding a adjustable boost valve
Turbo hiff 44/ inlet manifold/plenum/ dump valve
Mega jolt/edis set up
Custom exhaust manifold set up
Spanking new Garrett Gt-1548 turbo (mounting this on clutch housing like a janspeed set up)

Here is a pick of the car so you can see it as it is ……..engine pictures to follow

same here (injection - turbo) but i got a metty lump and am spending around 1500 quid for someone to rebuilt it with some extras.

by the way if your using your spi block then MOT's will be impossible to pass as neither engine or car are from the older emmisions standards.

just remember if you modify the bulkhead you will need an IVA test

if you go this route there may be other changes needed to your mini

say if i where to buy a wrecked 1275 out of say a 85 mini and used the engine number and put it on my block then i could register that in my car .....yes>?

It may be a bit confusing though, they didn't produce the 1275 engine in 1985.

And yes it's illegal.

How are you going to go about lowering the compression ratio?

theres alot of people buying turbo bits and bolting to standard/ already used engines, a combination of this and people buying old metty lumps and boosting them up is why turbos have gained the reputation of being unreliable... which is aparently not the case.

as minimad said are you lowering comp ratios? if not it may not be wise to run any more than the standard (non metty ecu) boost which would be 4psi aroundabouts.

well i thought 1275's wher like built from 1970 onwards- poss even before...no expert on it...i just picked 1985 as i know it was pre spi engine builds

Enlarging the chambers will lower the compression so i think i am having my head modded

from what i can remember the last 1275 GT was built in 1980 and there were no 1275 built minis until the relaunch of the cooper in 1990

Yeah, if you google, compression ratio calculator, you will be able to decide what size chambers you want and be able to decide the boost you will run.

This is what I meant, they didn't produce the 1275 engine in 1985, changing the number on the block is illegal, you may want to add a few mods lower down aswell.

Well your diff won't last long. So I suggest a 4 pin diff. Maybe an upgraded clutch.

What condition is the engine and gearbox in at the moment? A bad condition engine/box will last minutes under a good dose of boost.

Oh, I meant to say, nice mini by the way.

cheers for comment on the car..thinking its looking not bad at the moment :shifty:

the engine is really good, pulls very strong and gearbox is good...thats why i wanted to keep it rather than buying a old 1275 i dont know the history of

i think i will invest and get a 4 pin diff....later i wanted to get straight cut gearbox..i hear the standard clutch is good for 100bhp...so i was going to get car up to this kind of stage then upgrade after that.....

you know if its worth getting 1.5 high lift roller rockers as i have heard diffrent things some people say there wasted on a turbo set up?

They did produce 1275's in 85 but they put them in Metros. I don't know of any rule that says you can't put the engine from a different car in.

Yes, I was thinking for mini's.

Yeah plently of people fit metro engines into minis.

The spi is a good start as it already has the high pressue pump and return fuel lines.

Are you going to be removing the servo? pretty sure you won't be ale to fit both above the clutch cover.
