Are there any 5 speed gearboxes?

I saw an engine today that was very strange, the owner says its a 1100cc, but it looks 1275 A+.
It has vented disks and 4 pots.
The clutch has a cable in stead of the usual slave pump.

But the oddest thing is that the man says it has 5 speeds

can anyone identify what unit is it?

here are some pictures:

yes 5 speed was available for the mini but the casting numbers on your gear box dont relate to that, the engine is indeed an a+, it could be a 1000cc bored out to 1100? or a 1275cc. early metros used cable clutches. take a road test in to determin if its 5 speed or not

5 speed bozes are still available, you just have to pay through the arse for them

can get one for around £2K, IMO not worth the money at all

That is a 1275, and highly unlikely to have a five speed box

Unfortunately all the photo's are of casting numbers and are next to useless in identifying the contents or specification...

All rover fitted 5 speed boxes were built by Jack Knight and have JKD on the front of the box as they are specially cast cases... The one there is just an ordinary A+ case, however could have been converted to a 5 speed gearset at a later date... but the speedo cover would be the identifying difference...

The Clutch being a cable, just means it came from a metro... not all metros used cables, but some did.

Ther were some "specials" built with 5 speed boxes - Like the AEG (All Electric Garages of Birmingham) Sports which was basically a Rover MPi Sportspack with a similar mods to the JCW version but this used a TRAN-X unit (usually cast on the casing like JKD)................John, I'm sure you'll remember this photo :)

They are just normal casting numbers, they mean very little and do not describe in anyway the internals of the gearbox..

consider that it still has the cable clutch meaning the engine is from a Metro, and as such I doubt very much there is a five speed gear set in there.

Easiest way to find out if it is a five speed is by selecting the gears without the selector mechanism, easy done with a small screwdriver through the roll pin hole. There should be five gears and reverse, making six in theory.

Finding a five speed on an engine like that would be like winning jackpot lottery, while few people win the jackpot, it does happen, the odds are just millions to one, lol.

If you think 5 speed gearboxes are rare........... Colletti first did a five speed in the late 60's / early 70's JKD have been making 5 speed gearboxes for almost 20 years.............. and 6 speed for considerably less :)

JKD cases are lot stronger than the original and are a sought after commodity for that reason... :)

Rover had the castings "outsourced" for JKD and the "standard" machining ops where in house at Rover, there where less than 2000 cases made... and the last 1000 cases where fitted to the last 1000 Minis on the production line

And lets face it with the sticky tyres and higher final drive ratio and torque the chances are that a few have met with the great crucible in the sky
