hi,
as title really,
What advantages would be felt from a stage 1 kit on a 998cc?
Eventually i would like to change to a 1380cc but whilst insurance is still high thats not yet possible.
Any help and opinions would be great.
Thanks.

Stage one Kit improves the breathing of the engine.

On a 998 you will feel the difference, and it will sound nicer!

Idealy a set up on a rolling road will improve after fitment.

With my stage one 998cc i havnt got it set up on a rr yet and it more than likely isnt as smooth as it could be.
But my brother has a virtually identical mini 30 with no stage one fitted. I can pull away from him easily. It is one of the best lump sums you can spend on a 998.

With my 998 stage 1, I could just about keep up with my mates standard SPI.

It's a good addition to be made.

or would you suggest me doing a higher stage kit now?
Thanks

if insurance is a problem for a 1380 then is it ok to start modding the 998? Best to check that out first.
And is money an issue, a stage 1 will be around £150ish and you should be able to fit yourself, after that it gets harder and more expensive pretty quick.

If you budget for a decent rolling road tune at a Mini friendly garage after fitting your stage 1 kit then it'll probably be the best mod you'll ever do to a 1000

Yea as said. You will be able to tell the difference. Mini Sport sell some good kits. I'm putting a new 998 in mine which I'll be putting a stage 1 kit on again as well as a stage 3 fast road head. But again as said that when it starts to get pricey.

I just fitted the Minispares stage 1 kit today and it was the best fitting one that I've ever had out of the box, included absolutely everything required and fitted a dream...

All that's required now is a quick session on the rolling road to finalise the set up..

I recently fitted the same kit on recommendations from this forum (mine has a single back box RC40 and a K&N cone filter though) and it's made a significant difference even without a proper tuning/rolling road session. Like everyone else has said, fitting a stage 1 kit is the best thing you can do on a 998; everything above that costs more with less gain.

It's really a two man job, but one person can do it in a day.

We found with that after fitting ours and retuning by ear the timing etc. that the engine was more responsive and revved a bit more freely, it was also a bit quicker with more pull.

It's still not earth shattering performance of course, but for the price it certainly makes a nice improvement.

Sorry to bump an OLD thread but does anyone know if it's worth adding a stage one to a 1275?

Also, minispares says it helps fuel consumption, is this noticeable?

I doubt youill get a better MPG, you'll be flooring throttle much more..

Wont make a big difference unless you get an HIF44 to replace the 38mm carb

Remember to service the car prior to fitting

Was bog standard 1980 Mini 1000...then - Cooper (12G295) head, Sportex Intake, Hitachi 38 mm carb/K&N,  MG Metro cam, duplex timing gears/chains, Pertronix Ignitor, medium bore LCB, Peco single box exhaust...passed emissions tests annually, was up on power over stock 998s, gave 40 miles/Imp. Gal. or a little better...with adjustable suspension, 10"x5" 100+ wheels & A008s was fastest small bore Mini in Giant Slalom at Portland International Raceway (just before 998 came out)...faster than all but 1 Triumph (hot Spitfire) and all but 3 Jaguars on the day.

If I were working a small bore again, I would at minimum look to the small bore, 3 into 1 Supa Pipes in use in Australia.  Going for the best, I'd use a Russell Engineering build with oversize pistons, worked head, RE 13 cam, Supa Pipes and have a Cooper S performer with docile manners.

GuessWorks, I have the same set up. Just finished installing it. Still need a tune though.

I also did some carb mods. Swapped out to a butterfly with no overrun valve, trimmed the spindle and soldered the screws and trimmed them.

I'll be adding a stub stack later.

Even un-tuned I noticed a big difference. More torque and pick up. I also upgraded the Mechanical fuel pump too.

Mini Dave, The Stage One, on a value basis, is a great affordable upgrade and gives room for further upgrades later down the line. I just wish I had done it sooner.

I have two 1098's in the garage that I was thinking of swapping ( one was completely rebuilt) but I like the results I got with the Stage One. Plus nothing sounds as bad ass as a 998.

It just has that unique growl.
