Went out in the van tonight, the head lights work fine but I have no rear lights except brake lights and no dash lights. Checked the fuses and the bottom one was blown, so I robbed the second one down as it was the same amperage (20) and it blew again after a second or two, but I also noticed before it blew that the dash lights were very dim.

Anyone got any ideas before I rip the loom out for inspection??

The fuse has blown, then I tried another and that one blew too.

rich was this happening before you started welding tonight

have a look to see if you've melted a cable, which is shorting out, i dont think this is an earth problem as this would cause the lights not to work at all

I don't drive the van much so don't know if its only just started or not, but I have checked the wires around were I was welding and they all look to be ok, no melts or anything.

Can anyone say what rating the fuse is for the dash lights/rear lights?

im sure the fuses are 8amp.

ok i think the best thing to do is to isolate the problem so you know what to fix or change.

unplug the rear light clusters, and then try and see what happens. if they still blow we need to look at the dash, unplug the dash, and see what happens, also have a look at the electrical connections under the scuttle, where the wire's connect to go to the rear of the car, if one's snapped it could be shorting out

ill have a think and see where else to check

catch me on msn later if you like

Ok, I fitted a 35amp fuse and it blew it straight away. Went through all the wiring in the engine bay and it all looks about as ok as mini wiring ever does, so checked the back loom and think the problem may be between the passanger side lights and drivers side. I'm gonna have to take the loom out to see if there is a problem tho :gimme:

So while I'm at it I might as well take the front loom out too and put new connectors throughout and re-tape it all too.

If the fuse is blowing straight away there must be a short direct to earth.

And if its only just happened i would say have a look at the areas that you can see without ripping out the loom.
