Model: Mini Cooper 1.3i (Mpi)
Year: 1998

Only recently (this week actually) my car has had some trouble running from a very cold start. By that I mean staying out all night (yes she's a right rebel >_< ) and starting the morning after. She's felt a bit rough on the key turn for a while now, just while cranking, no idle problems. But now, its happened twice, if I dont let her warm up and drive up the road to uni it feels like she's mis fueling at low revs, sputtering and not accelerating etc. Worst is setting off in first, struggles for a bit like she's out of fuel then clears up and acts normally. I've always been religious about not revving the engine at all when cold, I've never been over 1.5k until the gauge reads warm so its not like I thrash the car.
The problem goes away after about 4-5mins, but thats my journey to uni pretty much over in most cases, so its not ideal :)

I havnt had a chance to check yet, and I wouldnt really know how to test sensors etc without a multimeter or diagnostics unit. I'm thinking maybe the IACV, since thats the cold start bit (right?? :P ) But it feels more like a fuel issue, so perhaps a blocked filter? I've never changed it, and am ashamed to say I dont even know where it is on the Mpi.

Anyone had this before?

have a little look at my almost same troubles with my mpi about a few posts down.

However my car is showing these signs all the time now.

I thought it got a little better when I swapped out the Coolent temp sensor, but >_<

I don;t think its ICV related, as if its starting ok and idling ok when you start it then that is what it's sole purpose is. Also it helps maintain revs when you let of the throttle suddenly.

Sounds like a temp related issue similar to mine. Just a case of finding out what :)

I have a ACR4 reader but will only show faults if the sensors are faulty. If they are giving values that are wrong they will not show up on reader.

For example today when driving to work, there was 3 inches of snow on the ground and freezing outside. My IAT sensor was showing 30 degrees.

Yeah I did have a good read through that one, but mine only does it when very very cold, If I leave it cool down for a few hours, 7 in uni on a monday, and go back and start her up i dont get any issues. Only when its left overnight in freezing temperatures. Is there like an injection equivalent of carb icing I wonder? lol
Whereabouts is the fuel filter? I'd like to change it to see if that helps, although I would have thought if it was that then the problem wouldnt be dependant on temperature.

fuel filter is located on the rear subframe, under the petrol tank side.

just watch u dont damage the pipes when replacing as they are a *woman of ill repute* to buy new.
