Model: MPI
Year: 1996/97
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): Hello! long time no visit, I fell out of love with the mini a couple of years back when it kept on breaking everytime it got fixed.

well here we are again, I've found an nice little mini specialist in brighton who's done some work on the 'old' girl for me (I just don't have the energy to do it any more, I need a break!), sorted the breaks etc and got her through her MoT. Now my only 2 problems are 1: an oil leak, which is major! I've been told that the crankshaft oil seal has gone. 2: the speedo is still miles out, need to replace the speedo gears.

So the garage have spent 2 hours trying to get to the crankshaft oil seal and have come back and said they can't do it without lifting the engine out which is a days work. If he says this I believe him. They aren't going to charge me for the lost time with what they've done so far and want to know if I want them to proceed... I figured if they're going to take the engine out I might as well buy the correct pinion and worm from guessworks and get the speedo working.

Anyway, I'm just wondering, is it realistic that a mini specialist would struggle to replace the crankshaft oil seal without lifting the engine fully out? on an MPI.

I don't have the patients to work on her any more, every time I do anything something else goes wrong a few weeks later, and I've just moved and all my tools are being stored at my folks and I have nowhere to work on her given where I now live.

I don't like doubting companies that I trust, but I could just do with a little more input from some pro's ^_^

Don't need to remove the engine, mpi is the same in that regards to all other minis

Got this funny deja-vu feeling...

You can do both jobs with the engine in the car, to change the crankshaft seal you will need to remove the timing cover, which in turn means you'll need to remove the pulley and most of the time the n/s engine mount and bracket... On an MPi this should be a simple task as there's no radiator in the way only an expansion tank, and while the engine mount is off it's easy to get to the speedo drives.

Rover job time sheet states 3 hours to do... which is plenty.

Cheers for the responses.

Cheers again guessworks <_<

I guess I need to ask the garage why they couldn't do it...
