Hi,

Just got my engine out to overhaul and want to tidy up the engine bay. Just been to Hellfrauds to buy some autoglym engine clean. Its doing a good job. Im now in the progress of cleaning all the muck off the engine bay and suframe. I was hoping not to have to paint it, but i really need to...

My car is white, the engine bay bulkhead looks ok, i just need to paint the inner wings, inner front end. What do you guys suggest regarding painting...take the effort to spray it using cans? or just briush paint?

Someone told me brush painting will look rubbish, but then my inner wings arent exactly smooth and in top notch like the outer bodywork. Problem with white is any dirt shows up too easily!

what do you think?

cheers

yeah thats what i was thinking. I mean that was my first worry...getting overspray on my bodywork where i dont want it, and the engine bay is nothing like the quality of my outer bodywork. There are notches dents, welding spatter etc everywhere. I was thinking unless i prep it all and have it sprayed by a professional bodyshop then why not just hammerite it? lol

Ive just painted the Engine on Boris with Engine Enamel from Moss ^_^

I dont think it looks rubbish
Though i must admit if your going to paint things like the Rocker Cover,Coil etc its best to use an Aerosol with Moss do also in the matching shade as on smaller smoother items the Aerosol give a nicer finsh but the engine block isnt a smooth casting anyhow so Brush on Enamel works well :trooper:

yeah without a shadow of doubt i shall be painting the engine block with a brush. I will be replacing everything else on the block like coils, alternator...etc.

I think the only other thing i will be painting than the engine bay is the brackets.

Your block looks nice. I think a lick of paint certainly changes the presentation. Im sticking classic red and silver for the engine.

Its just the damn engine bay. Its a slightly different shade of white to the rest of my car. Im going to have fun matching hammerite!

Did you remove everything from the engine first then paint? or do it in sections|im tempted to do it in sections so i dont forget where to put things back lol!

No matter how you paint the block you will not be able to tell if its been sprayed or brushed as its rough. The rocker cover I did with a brush. It doesn't look bad, just depends how good you are with a brush!
You can tell that I brushed the rocker cover if you look closely, but its not that noticeable and I don't really care! As for paint I just used some green engine laquer

Boris is Currently Undergoing a Restoration at a Bodyshop,i go Over and do some bits myself ;)
Check out This Page on my Thread ;)
http://www.theminifo...x...4169&st=195

Yes the Block was stripped of Alternator,Coil,Rad,and the Throttle Body Injection Unit and exhaust manifold from the rear of the Block ^_^
Incidentally we have tried to clean the engine previously with Gunk but it was useless :teehee:

This time we Stripped The Engine With 3in1 Heavy Duty Degreaser from Halfords :trooper:

Really Good Stuff :trooper:  :w00t:

We just sprayed it on and scrubbed it off with cheap Asda Dish Sponge Scourers ;)

Check out the thread see how dirty his Block was,how clean it came up and keep an eye of the thread over the next few days to see it all back together

I agree completely with Mk1leg, I'd prep thoroughly and spray the engine bay, not brush. Obviously it depends on your desire and resources.

You voiced concern about masking the other paint work. It will be easy enough for you to mask the outer wings and you only need a cursory masking of other components. An easy and effective masking technique is to wrap aluminum foil on the parts you want to protect. It is easily formed and can be tucked and folded into places masking paper is difficult to use.

If you don't find the paint you want in rattle cans, consider buying it mixed at a paint shop to your color preference. You can use an inexpensive, single-action air brush to spray sections of the engine bay at a time. If you don't have an air compressor, your spare tire can be a source of air for an air brush. Just refill it frequently at your local service station.

Consider roller painting the engine bay etc. Hot topic on the forum atm and good results can be achieved without fear of overspray.
