Please give your topic a title that quickly describes your problem. Just putting 'Help my Mini doesn't work' is useless to anyone trying to help.

MG metro 1293cc:
2 oil leaks. 2 on both diff plates, 1 at the bottom of the timing cover, 1 at the join between the clutch hosing and block

I've just rebuilt this engine, I cleaned and scrubbed everything, getting all the old gaskets off and making sure the matting surface was clean. I carefully put back together with the right gaskets and sealant, and torqued everything to the right settings.

But here i am, a little *drunk* off having to take the engine out again!

Im really starting to run out of money now and i really didn't want to be doing this again. And i want to make sure this is the last time i do this, so i want to get it right. Anyone had the same problems and what did you do to get it sorted? Any advice and help is most welcome.

thanks

When putting things together I use grease thinly brushed on with a paint brush, never any compound or sealant....

As you've done make sure all surfaces are clean and free of old gaskets, and use a torque wrench on ALL nuts and bolts. If things have a torque setting of only 18lbft then it's for a reason... which is generally less than can be tightened by hand... ie over compressing gaskets...

Not used any sealant ah? I bet you put engines back together with shiny new bits? :)

Im not sure about using nothing but grease and gasket is going to work, just feels like its going to leak even more!!
Im sure that works Im just not sure its going to work for this engine!!! Maybe Im just over worried. This rebuild has taken me almost 6 months to do due to time and most of all money! Im starting to loose the will to live! Totally paranoid Im going to *melon* it up again and waste more time and money, and its still going to leak!!!

I too use a smear of grease instead of gasket sealant, by the way are you sure nuts and bolts werent tightened in some wrong order or the torque wrench itself needs some resetting?

there is always a chance, but im sure as i could be.

It just sucks when you put so much work in to something and it goes tits up. Ah well, I'll get there in the end.

I think there was a feature in Mini World that you might want to che.............oh............hang on :) :)

when my M*rspeed engine, gearbox and diff was taken apart there was more silicone floating around than in Jordan's appendages.

Mr guessworks pulled a large slab of it out of the diff from the promotive rig as well.

So I'd guess that they also suffer oil leaks on new builds, so wedge as much silicone in as feasibly possible. :)

you are not alone I to have a MG engine in mine that I totaly rebuilt and that leaks oil at the clutch to engine housing and the half moon seal I think. I used sealer and a good gasket set cleaned it all and it still leaks,I havnt done anything about it yet but it now gets into the fan and that is chucking it everywhere really annoying me

It could be nothing to do with the gaskets or sealant.
Some of the threads into the gearbox casing go right through into the inside meaning oil can seep between the bolt threads and out past the bolt head - check this before pulling the engine

I know how you feel mate, been there and had it leaking really bad, so out it came to get re gasketed, a neighbour gave me a tube of Dirko gasket sealer, i used this on the whole engine and gearbox and its proved to be fine, no leaks at all, and touch wood non to come.

Heres a link to ebay with the item.

sometimes also happens if you use too much sealant.. causing an uneven thickness. Im having a similar issue with the timing cover.. mine will be off again this weekend.

Yes, the bolts go through a gasket, but they go through a hole in the gasket.
If a bolt can go through the gasket so can oil
