Isn't an MPI Cooper basically the Mini equivalent of a GTI whatever?

As with the others, I'm not quite sure what you mean, but according to good ol' Wikipedia, GTI means "Grand Tourer Injection, an automobile model variant with fuel injection, often a "hot hatch". So an SPi or an MPi is essentially a GTI going by that definition...

well a mini is a saloon, but I guess a a Cooper Si would be the GTi equivalent! My old mk2 Golf GTi was a beast!

Also I guess a CLubman would be a GTi if it used fuel injection not a carb.

yeah as everybody said - it's what VW call there sports models, so no different to Cooper S.

I think I'm right in saying that VW now own the rights to call something a GTi or TDi??

In the same way that MINI own the rights to call something a Cooper or Cooper S and how Honda own the rights to call something a Type S or Type R.

Peugeot also call their hot hatches GTi aswell. Don't think it's a trademarked name unless put after something like '106 Gti'.
