Replacing Brake Hose

Hello all,

I have purchased some braided steel lines for my standard single piston front brakes and was curious as to the easist way to get the old rubber lines out. What size is the nut on the inside that connects to the hardline and is there a trick to getting them out? Mine seem a bit set-in-stone and i don't want to strip it.

I don't wish to give you any false information regarding the size of the nuts/hexes on the brake lines and fittings but I will offer a tool suggestion.

Invest in a set of "flare nut wrenches". These are like box-end (ring?) spanners but they have a cut through the ring. The wrench will make contact with 5 flats (plus a little) around the hex to give you more contact and less chance of rounding them off. Avoid using regular open end wrenches.

My dilema...

Basically you have the hose connected from the bottom up through the panel and on the top side is a bigger nut with a hardline going to it. The small hardline also has a smaller hex head nut on it. I am confused as to how I can get this off with the hardline in the way, and the panel has a lip on it which prevents me from getting onto the bigger nut from the side angle.

The nut on the underside ont he rubber hose side looks a tad stripped out and I dont want to end up cutting it off.

As I recall....( I think you're talking about the line coming up through the subframe )..you need to undo the hard line on top. I used a deep socket with long extensions from above to reach down to the large nut. Hold the brake line nut from below and losen the large nut above.

what i did was to peel back / cut off the rubber hose bit to expose more but area, then because i was also afraid of stripping it i hacksawed through the pipe so i could get a socket or ring-spanner on it, position it so if it spins it will lock into position.

Then get the correct sized socket and undo from above. I nearly stripped it too getting it off, before i realised it was undo from above.

These really are brilliant, a mate let me borrow one when I was fitting mine and I got some as soon as I found some, really useful for loads of hard-to-get-at-nuts as well as the brake lines.

The big nut is 15/16".

The hex underneath, on the hose is 18mm.

The brake pipe flare nut if like original should be 7/16", or 11mm is pretty close, but some replacement fittings have the right thread, but a 10mm hex.
