Not sure which section this should be in but thought the technical might be best. Just a warning for anyone with simmilar concerns.

Last year I asked a question on here about the play in my diff on my spi engine. When the car was jacked up you could feel slack or play in the diff through the driveshaft and jacked up wheel.

The engine has been sat in the shed for 6 months since I fitted the 1380 into Mini no 1. Now mini no 2 is nearly finished I wanted to use it in that.

After gaining much more experience with engines and a mate having a diff pin smash out of the housing in his autotest car I decided to take the diff out and check it, and ordered a new diff pin in ready.

What I found is pretty scary.

Pretty worn!!

But as well as the diff pin the diff housing had been deeply scored by the planet wheels.

Luckily I have a spare gearbox sat in the shed, so I stripped the diff out and it was in pretty good condtion with minimal wear, so the diff was rebuilt with the spare housing and new pin and put back in the car.

The only problem so far is I forgot to change the oil seal "o" ring on the detent spring on the side cover and it leaked oil, once that was sorted all seems well.

Another reason to get an x pin diff for the 1380 a soon as possible.

My diff pin snapped on me, didn't damage too much other stuff, I Dunoon what you think caused yours, but I think the previous owner adding deep dish alloys to an already tired gearbox was the death of mine! Might be worth checking the big bearings in the gear box, they went after the diff pin!

seen worse

I cannot re-iterate this enough. The Diff pin is the weak link in the gearbox, if your engine is anything other than standard or you are running a long final drive (2.7 or 2.9) then an uprated diff pin is a MUST, and I would suggest using one of the Minispares "C-BTA164 DIFFERENTIAL PIN WITH MOLYBDENUM COATING", and if you're motor is what could be considered "tuned", get an X-pin.

If you fit a new diff pin, make sure the pinions are also not exhibiting the same wear characteristics, they should be smooth with maybe some evidence of the original grinding marks visible, but definitely no scoring, if not then replace them aswell...

Right then

Double roller bearing checked while diff was out and appeared to be ok.

GW yes there will be an x pin diff ordered asap for the other car with the 1380. I fitted an updated diff pin from mini spares in this one and used good planet gears in the rebuild as they were goosed I thought you may have seen worse.
