I think I know what I'm doing with this, but just wanted to make sure. I've attached an image the the manifold, and I right in saying I just need to take a die grinder to the inside edges (arrowed in the picture) and smooth them out to meet the outer edge that mates to the block?

Thanks
JP

The head should have a similar grove cut into it where a locating ring should be housed, this was added onto all heads which ran a separate inlet manifold to exhaust manifold so that it could be correctly lined up...

Yes thats what I did. However, if you intend to use the locating rings, don't bother. Concerntrate more, I'd suggest, on getting rid of the casting marks along the internal length of the manifold.

ETA Vizard suggests it makes no difference whether the locating rings are kept or not.

but it will make a big difference if you don't get your inlet manifold lined up with your ports, which is what the rings are there to do...

With the manifold above this is not as easy as a aftermarket manifold for a carb because they are located by the manifold studs where as these are not.

i had the locating rings alterd to ensure correct diameter from inlet manifold into head ports when my engine was built, your better off doing that than removing the rings entirly, also the tops of the rings were reshapped to allow for the injectors

thats how i would and did do it :)

Thanks chaps, are they special rings, or just the right sized 'o' rings? I don't remember them being there when I dismantled it.#

by the way - here's a picture of the re-built engine going in :)

They are metal rings that fit in the inlet manifold.

they are made of light alloy and can be damaged easily when refitting

One thing that can be done if you really want to get rid of the ring, is to add a locating dowel.

You would install the intake with the rings in place, then drill (on a press I would say) a hole through the intake and into the head. Insert a dowel of the same size and the head will always be perfectly lined up.

Well, at least in theory anyway:-) not sure this can be done and if there is enough room on these manifolds. Just something I remember reading in Vizards books at one point.

The manifold below was modified to Rover/ BMH ST department specification as it was fitted to the Rover/BMH 1996 Nurburgring 24hr racer. Its not yet been doweled as its fresh out the box. The inlet ports on the head match the standard injection manifold gasket. holes were drilled in the gasket for the dowels. These holes were then transfered onto both the head, and the manifold, thus perfectly matching the manifold to the head when the dowels are fitted.

;)
