Model: Mini Flame Red
Year: 1990

Over the last couple of weeks I've heard squeaking from under the bonnet but thought nothing of it, but it has got a lot louder recently and it happens when idling and also in lower gears, particularly when pulling off, changing down gears and reversing.
I think this is due to the fan belt, but don't know how to go about fixing it? Can I tighten/adjust it, or will I need to replace it (it doesn't look worn or old though)?

Hi

Yes it will just need tightning..

Loosen the top two bolts on the alternator, then underneath the alternator is another bolt which you just loosen and pull the alternator towards you, whilst holdeing it tighten it back up and the top bolts then should be all ok

Iv done it a few times and found it good to have a mate to hold the alternator up whilst i was tightening it to make sure it didnt loosen again.

if you don't know how old the belt is replace it

although it is funny when you are there with one foot on the alternator back on the floor and reaching out to tighten the bolt back up.........

Have a good look around the engine bay for oil - if you have an oil leak that gets
onto the fan belt it will slip no matter how well adjusted it is. As said before, if you
don't know how old it is just replace it.

A tyre lever between the block and alternator will make it easy to tension the belt .

Use a piece of wood personally as I have a chrome alternator and don't want to scratch it
