Hi to all ,
first time on here please excuse me if i make mistakes! I have also been looking at the Britpart electronic conversion kit part number ETC5835K. I emailed Britpart direct to ask them if ok to fit to a mini as most seem to go on to land rovers with the same distributor as a mini ie Lusas 45D4 . They kindly rang me back today and they told me although they do fit a mini they DON'T recommend them for small cc high revving engines they are designed for the 2 1/4 litre low revving Land rover . He said it will work but not for long and may damage the engine in high revs as timing could be thrown out.(ie i think the unit can not keep up?) As i say this has come from the people that make the units not the man in the shop trying to sell you one. Make your own minds up.I hope this is of help to any one.

I dunno, my old Series 2.25 had a problem with its transfer box, so couldnt go into low range, getting up large hills (or side of the house for that matter) was fun, revved it ALOT then >_<

I looked at these at the time when my dizzy in that failed but decided to forgoe the worry of further problems buying a 2nd hand dizzy and electronic unit, and just bought a new complete one off ebay, can never find them again though (from the same seller) but there are these on atm.....oh dear, forgotten how to hyperlink.....here's the ebay number:280464491860 get yah self a new cap, leads, plugs and lucas sports coil (seemed to work well with the Series) and your laughing

Others will surely post to your thread soon about this. While you are waiting for them to chime in, please try the search feature in the upper right hand portion of this page. Search using the keyword "britpart". You will find several threads, including some that have run within the past month or so.

There are many people on this board who have installed the Britpart kit. I can only remember one person who reported problems with it. Most people who have installed it seem quite pleased with the kit.

I'm a bit surprised that the manufacturer is worried about their kit being used in a Mini.

I've commented on plenty of these Britpart threads. This is my personal experience of them

Fitted to two cars 1989 and 1990 models. They have been fitted to daily use cars for approx 2 yrs with no problems at all.
Only thing I can't comment on is the new kit , they have changed the design slightly in the last few months.

As said previously ive had no problems in my clubby estate after about 8 thousand miles. also as i work in a land rover spares outlet ive been getting hold of these for other people in the KMC and ive yet to hear any problems back.

My only thought is that they are covering there backs by saying the unit isnt suited to a non land rover engine.
surely when designing an electronic unit such as this they would match the specifications to the distributers limitations and not how often the engine is revved?

However as i said until more people come back to us and tell us of any problems they have had i wouldnt be unduly worried.

Think thats me, I tried the Britpart kit and age ago and it just would not work on my car. Fitted and it ran like I'd just throw a spanner in it. So I went back to points.

Think I still have the kit in the garage, might try it again one day with tweaks.

I was given one of these yesterday, it seems awefully tight. Did anyone have difficulty fitting the magnetic ring over the spindle?

Edit: The ring split, I'll order another kit and perhaps bevel the lead edge with a small file before I try again...

I've not fitted the newer type but even the older ones were snug.!!

I believe the main reason for these unit failing in a mini is the coil, using either a ballast type or the electronic ignition type is a recipe for disaster. Ran one on my Elf for 12 months, swapped the engine(and the coil), the unit failed in minutes.

Use a a standard 12v coil.

I have one, it works perfectly, and im still using it on a ballasted coil with no problems whatsoever, its got to have been in around 6 months now, if not a little longer

I had to take a fraction of material off the back of mine with a stanley knife to fit the trigger ring, just take the tinyest amount off each time and keep trying to refit it using only the slightest force, when youve got it right it should slide on a treat

Cool - I'll give it a go when the bits arrive. I've recently switched to a non-ballast coil and ballast resistor, but have retained the old 'ballasted' Lucas gold coil if needed. This should be interesting. Thanks for your thoughts -

If you have a non ballast coil why do you have a ballast resistor?

The problem is not the ballasted coil itself, it's connecting the module to the ballasted supply. Land Rovers were never ballasted so the module is designed specifically for 12v. Britpart are a Land Rover parts company so it's not surprising they only designed it for Land Rovers really. So long as the module gets 12v it should work fine with a ballasted coil.

Hi,
I fitted one of these about 6 months ago and its been brilliant so far. I even got an extra one as a spare as its so much cheaper than the other options. The magnet is a very tight fit, I wrecked mine putting it on but it still works perfectly. I would advise some patient shaving with a stanley knife until it goes on! Make sure the module gets 12v like has been suggested.
