I proudly own a 998cc mini mayfair fitted with a stage one kit

Im not complaining but my exhaust sounds rudely louder than any other stage one kits

when i sit there and just gently tap the revs it proper roars

it was louder than my mates mini 1275 stage one kit

just concerned it might not be connected correctly

Is there any need for concern? :w00t:

or should i just shut up and listen to that sweet tune? :)

Many thanks

Sam

Just the exhaust i believe

when i stick it in 1st gear and pull away

its makes a real loud roar and then as it hits highier revs its an almost crackly sound, like the noise you make by blowing through your lips when tight together but down a tube

I think i gathered why, cause mine doesnt have a catalytic converter because its 1983 model whereas the Mini is a 1996 model fitted with catalytic converter for legal rules.

Not all stage ones use the same size exhaust either.

My sisters as an RC40 big bore silencer center exit, thats a lot louder than my maniflow center exit.
Also the air filter set up gives a fair bit of noise.
cone and pancakes give more induction noise than an element in the airbox.

If it's significantly loud then I'll bet there's a leak. I find it quite hard to completely seal an exhaust. I was once told to start the engine, stand at the tip of the exhaust with your back to the car and use the sole of your shoe to cover the end effectively sealing it up (you could use a thick rag or something I suppose). If the car dies you've got a good sealed exhaust, if the car carries on running, the exhaust gases are escaping from somewhere else

I have fitted a minisports stage 1 kit and you seem to have the same problem as myself. The Y piece at the bottom of the lcb manifold constantly leaks because the clamps provided don't tighten up enough. I have resorted to some gum gum around the joints and it's now OK........ until I grounded it on a rough road/track

We are just fitting a minisport stage 1 exhaust now. It seems that half the fitting brackets are missing and no nuts for the bolts at all. Is this normal. There is no obvious way of fitting it and the instructions are not exactly instructional.

Any ideas from anyone who has done this before.

cheers

simple question
is it a straight through exhaust system or is it a twin box system?

by the way your making it sound it could well be a straight through system (if there are no leaks and such)

take a look under the mini and if it goes from downpipe straight to back box then you have a straight through and that could be why its so loud, if there is another box before the back box then you have a twin box ( the first being a supressor of sorts) which is the quieter of the two.

failing all that then yeh there could be a leak in the system somewhere

quick simple test i used to do is this...

start it up and let it warm up
get a mate to hold an old rag in the end of the exhaust to restrict the gas escaping, meanwhile lye down and listen for leaks further up the exhaust especially at the joints. it might have rusted through somewhere if it is a really old system, the baffles in any box(s) might have also gone. carefully as not to burn your hand move it near the exhaust BUT DO NOT TOUCH IT! and if there is any gas escaping you will feel it. the most common place they leak is around the Y peice at the bottom of the LCB, this could be due to incorrect fitting or the exhaust being dislodged by a kerb etc...

as for fitting the system, you can get various sizes of U bolts from any good motor factors, good idea to take your Y peice along so you can always trial fit it before you buy. also use lots of exhaust paste.

when fitted and secure, start up the car and let it tick over, but don't rev it otherwise it might blow any paste out!, leave it running for a bit then switch off and let the paste fully harden. the heat now helps the paste set quicker...
