You could do but you have no real idea what the condition is going to be like and as you say you are a complete novice then it will pay you to bite the bullet and buy a new one, personally i use a Clarke 135 TE Turbo Mig (Sounds so chav) and its handled everything i have thrown at it.
Like everybody else has mentioned on this thread DO NOT get gasless and if you do buy a Gas Mig then hire a gas bottle as it will be cheaper than buying those stupid little things that last 15 mins if you are lucky.
If you can get something like B.O.C Argoshield Light this will do you fine they do several sizes to suit your needs, you can pay monthly or yearly by direct debit and once you have finished you can return the bottle and cancel your contract and they will refund any full months left out of the contract.
There are other suppliers so it pays to hunt around B.O.C was handy for me.

Co2 works fine, but tends to create more spatter and apparently doesn't have corrosion protection. Agreed BOC are best for gas.

I have just finished my old pub CO2 bottle and could not get another quickly enough hence i went to B.O.C. I have been using CO2 for years when it was readily available ie pubs etc but after being told that an Argon CO2 mix is better then that is also another reason why i have gone down this route and i must admit i have noticed a difference.
If you can get your hands on a pub bottle of CO2 then that's cools as it is much cheaper its just a case of finding somebody who is close to you that can get you one. My last source has now retired.
