hi,please help 91 mayfair fuel gauge not reading correct ,have changed clocks and tank sender now at my wits end.

when you say not reading correct how do you mean? reading too much or too little or is it all over the place?

hi alex, its reading to low, i have also tried the fuse trick on wires to the sender unit and the gauge goes up .

is the sender unit wire bent too much?

the sender wire should be bent a bit. but make sure its not bent too much. try and take the sender out and with it connected move it all the way up the gauge should go up all the way too. if the sender is all the way at the top and the guage is all the way at the top, you need to bend the wire down a bit. if the sender is all the way to the top but the gauge is not then the fault could be with the guage, maybe a sticking needle ...

do you mean the two wires to the sender ?

sorry, should have been more clear.
i meant the wire that the float attaches to, which sits inside the fuel tank. if it has been bent to anything other than how it was made then it will give an inacurate reading...

mines the same.. if its the original sender over time the plastic float inside becomes porose which means in sinks abit with the added weight of absorbed fuel. ;)

yes they absorb some of the fuel over the years, ive been told that you can brill a small hole and drain it and then fill the hole with some glue again, but to be honest if it is that old it will just let it back in again, somewhere must just sell the new float surely....
