have tried moving the exhaust etc thinking it could be the manifold, the engine steady's been replaced recently....
PLEASE does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
could it be the subframe mounts? or engine mounts? how would i know if it was?

ok so this time we have a new problem. when accelorating, coming off the accelorator, and slowing down my mini is making a rather strange banging/knocking noise which is getting frustating as it appears to be getting worse over time

Put the hand brake on, get someone to look in the engine bay, put it in gear
and press the brake , gently release the clutch and see if the gearbox moves
excessively either side, if it does you may have a mount gone
you may be able to see if the mount has seperated without doing the above
by looking from underneath..
are you local??

thankyou for your offer
It is most likely to be cracked floor - where the rear mounts for the front subby attach to the shell.
i'm pretty sure it's not that because his floors are fairly solid from what i can see. will check though
