basically i have a mini, a crx and lots of spare time
<<<<<that crx in my avatar.
i cant decide if i should swap the crappy 998 in the mini for the ubermentalextremelypowerfulbuttorquelessb16 in the crx.

i have two crx`s, a minter and a munter(the white one) obviously i will be hacking the ugly one apart (if i decide to go ahead) so i will still have a car to get around in while work is ongoing.
as i already have all of the loom, cluster,ecu,driveshafts,hubs and stuff from the vt (vtec powered honda crx for all you non crxist`s out there)
what else would i need to purchase or fabricate to perform the conversion?

at the moment the mini (see "quick resto" in project section for details) has a standard 998 with running problems in the front and all adjustable geometry for the suspension sat in boxes waiting to either be fitted or sold to fund some of the swap. ideally i would like to keep the mini on the 12" wheels it currently sits on with the alloy 4 pots that i stoooopidly bought for it (waste'omoney) but these could also be sold if needs must.

i am a competent (sp) mechanic and im better at electrics than anything else so i think i am perfectly capable of carrying out the conversion, but i really cant make up my mind
WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Just bought a B16 for my van, so obviously I'm biased!

But it's the subby that's one of the main things to think about, too - Whether you build one or get a ready-made one, it's up to you!

Much easier to start with the car though, seeing as you've got everything already! I say go for it

spare mechanical hands here twiglett if you want them

but ehy not? if you can fit it inside a roundnose without going flippy fronted that would be better due to all this new testing cow-dung!! Butcher the std subby to save cash - and fabricate custom stuff to use the vt brakes and hubs - but normal mini 4pots should be up to the job!!

just my 2pence - i'd love to do one but think my mini will be staying as is for the nest 18 years

Why dont you do something a bit different and put the Mini motor into the Honda?

Are you sticking with your track day mini plans? If so a B16 min for the track would be great. And Charlie has some experience of creating silly engined minis so he's there to help if you need it...or is that a bit of a silly thing to say?

If you're not going to go with Cobra's idea, I think you should do it if you can afford/fabricate the subby

Get some manly torque into the mini and Vaux it .

But seriously, if you have even the smallest chance of ditching the A series engine - do it!. If its financially viable go for it. You may never have a chance to build one again - you only live once!

theres no way im paying 7k for a conversion kit
i would much rather spend a tenth of that and butcher an old subframe.
plus im in no rush so i might aswell do as much as i can myself and source the other bits as cheap as possible, it doesnt matter if i have a random assortment of bits under the bonnet aslong as it all bolts together and works.
