Been trying to find out the right oil to use in my 1998 Cooper. Manual says 10W 30 (which halfrauds don't sell), and Miniworld servicing guide says 10W 30 or 10W 40 for newer road cars but to change to 20w 50 or 60 after 10k miles.

I've bought 5W/40 fully synthetic from Halfrauds after choosing it from the little guide they have as they claim this is the recommended oil.

Will this oil do the trick or would I be better off with something else?

Cheers
Alex

Just a point that considering the MPi gearbox is one of the worst - durability wise. You really shoudn't be using any other oil than 20/50. Mini's had used this oil for 35 years before Rover cut costs by stocking one kind of oil for their fleet. The handbook is wrong. 20/50 all the way

This post in particular.

1. Don't believe what people say about 20/50.

2. Avoid synthetic as it's not very sympathetic to the baulkrings in the mini gearbox.

3. Whatever oil you use change it regularly.

4. There's nothing wrong with 10/40, it's been the recommended oil for this temperate climate for over 50 years, just because you get classic car oil which is 20/50 does not mean its the ONLY choice.

when I can get it I use Valvoline 20/50 racing oil

Its the best.

At present I am stuck to using comma 20/50 oil I bought 5 tins for £30 and got a free oil jug >_<

I would suggest to check the type of additive they use.
In order to withstand extream press on the gbox , sulfer additive should be the best.
If i'm not mistaken, for fully synthetic they are using either a blend of Group II & III or Group III base oil alone to blend the oil.
The additive that they put is differ between manufacture. This that make the oil differ between the brand.
Correct me if i'm wrong.
