I just noticed on my car that the right side has 3 spacer-shims/packing spacers stuck with the teardrop subframe mount, while the left side has none at all.
This explains why despite the left being few mm higher the wheels scrub when I turn to the right, and it doesn't scrub when I turn left.

The question is...how important is this spacer-shim? Is it necessary to have them on both sides?
And do people normally take them off or just leave them there?
by the way, my car is 1986 City with 12x5 wheels.

Thanks,

Daniel

The shims are a factory fit to take up the tolerance differences in the body and subframe...

even have a part number... 2A4292

The thing is, the car had a minor accident on the left side last year, which required left wing and front panel replaced.
And the shims on the left might have not been there previously or it might be lost when accident or after repair.
Considering that the left side is few mm higher than the right and yet it scrubs, am I right in thinking I should just replaced the shims on the left?
Or, will it mess up the alignment?

They are an 'as required' part...

the teardrop should be fixed to the front panel and any gap between subframe and mount taken up with the spacers, this is why the have a gap in them to slide between the mount and the frame over the fixing bolt through the mount to the subframe.

Thought I'd piggy back on this post.....  :D

Just got the rear subframe off my 1983 Mayfair, I noticed there is what appears to be some high density synthetic foam between it and the body.

I'm assuming this is a sound suppression device, is in necessary and can I replace it with rubber sheets?

Well

The 2 bars running front to back, just in front of the wheel, between the subframe and the floor of the boot

Do away with the entirely.

They were supposed to be a some sort of buffer between the subframe and body but in reality they just hold water and rot the boot floor and subframe.

In early deluxe Minis, that used to be a piece of felt which soaked up water like a sponge, helping to speed up the rotting of the body and encouraged you to buy a new..............................................Japanese car.

OK, thanks, yes could be cruddy felt, no rot above or below so think I have got away with it.

The subby looks fairly solid, prob gonna get it shot blasted to be sure, what is the best option for treating it when done?

Hot-dip galvinize it, treat it with zinc primer, and then Hammerite.
