Pliers can be a pain, you will have more movement with your hands so get fiddling
As above dont bother with the split pin go for the 'R' pin, will help loads if you get to that stage

can i use a bolt with hold drilled in it instead of a clevis pin? long story just wondered if it would be a bad idea?
