Check the ducting for leaks between the heater and the windscreen.

Flush it through - make sure the valve is fully open - fit a higher temp thermostat (88 or 92) - and blank off the bypass hose, if you have one !

Don't blank off your bypass, you must have some form of bypass or you'll fubar your water pump.

A thermostat will be less than £3 plus the price of a new gasket at less than 30p.

1. Locate thermostat housing.
2. Undo hose pipe clips at both ends of the top hose.
3 Wiggle hose off of thermostat housing.
4. Undo and remove the three bolts holding the thermostat housing to the cylinder head.
5. Pop the housing off, might take some encouragement due to gasket sealant etc. There will probably be plenty of coolant hanging around here so have some rags/towels handy. I've got a small syringe that I use to suck coolant up, squirt it into a bottle then put it back when I'm done
6. Prise old thermostat out of recess in head.
7. Carefully clean up mating surfaces on cylinder head and thermostat housing.
8. Pop in new 'stat.
9. Use a new gasket.
10. Replace housing, bolts (torqued up) and top hose. Done.

an 88 degree stat will 'wait' until 88 degrees is reached until it opens and allows water to be cooled through the radiator. Until then water travels round the engine/heater via the bypass.

Don't blank off your bypass, you must have some form of bypass and is a lot of effort to go to just to increase your heater temp.

thanks for the info i dont think ill block it off has any one got any pictures of where the new thermostate goes many thanks dan

The thermostat sits under the thermostat housing which is to the right (as you look at it) of the rocker cover. It has the top hose from the radiator attached to it.

I've got an 88 and it's toasty enough for me. Fit that, and use some electrical tape to seal up the gaps in the demist pipes and that should make sure air is getting to the screen.

I took my heater out, took it apart and sealed it right up. Now no air is escaping from anywhere but where it's directed
