I have seen LCBs glowing bright red when running up on a Rolling road ! I suppose it happens on the road too - if the engine has been working hard ?

i have no mods on the engine and its a 1275 mg metro engine, the engine is reving quite high and idleing rather quickly.
could these be part of the problem????

Indeed it could be ! Especially if running weak - it could burn out the piston crowns. Is the engine running at normal temperature ? Drop the idle speed - and set up the carb and ignition timing.

running fast can sometimes be down to an air leak.... if it is pulling outside air in to the engine AFTER the carb it will run lean and therefore hot

Also......... heat proof paint doesn't stop the heat, it just "works" in a hotter environment.

But all of above, especially check your ignition advance for the engine, is it the right dizzy for the MG ??

Have you been doing any work on the tappets at all? Friend of mine had the same problem but as well as the exhaust glowing red it would rev up either. He had set the tappets all over the place.

i do not know what the engine temprature, but the timing is out i think.
i adjusted the tappets properly, according to the haynes manual.
the timing has been mechanicly adjusted, but should be getting a strobe next week.
the HIF 44 came with a cone filter attached, i dont know if the needle has been changed any ideas to which needle should be fitted??

Look at the colour of the spark plugs. A leaky exhaust valve is a possibility too. BDL was the original spec needle on leaded MG Metros.

A red-glowing exhaust manifold is usually caused by retarded ignition. Wind a bit more advane on and see if this makes any differene, subject to it not 'pinking', that is.
