Its rather amazing how the 850 was around 30 seconds to 60 and then by boring it out such a little bit , pretty much halved the 0-60
22 sec actually
850's are better than 998's its a fact

A race-tuned and race-winning 850 from 1962 was tested at 16 secs (John Aley's car)
The original Cooper 998 with 55 bhp and a 3.76 final drive was 15.5 to 16 secs
The Mk 1 and Mk 2 Cooper 'S' 1275 was 10.5 - 11 secs with 3.44 final drive
The standard 998 Mini with 38 bhp was 19 - 20 secs
The Alpine rally-winning Cooper 'S' from 1967 was road-tested at 9 secs. That had c.105 bhp and a 4.1 final drive.

ahh yes i remember now 22 secs is a bit quick, i do intend to make an 850ish with about 85-90hp this year (forced induction)
You'll be hard pressed to get 85 - 90 bhp from any 850. Even a supercharged one is unlikely to get to more than about 65-ish and that is at a high boost pressure.
One of the problems with an 850 is the lack of a suitable crank as the competition ones are NLA and very hard to find. I guess pistons could be an issue too. The 998 is a much stronger engine to work with and can be bored out to around 1061 cc without any problems and good pistons are available too.
