Hello all,

PC boffins are needed here. This is starting to drive me mad.

When i open certain pictures, they come up as a thin line. The wierd thing is, it doesnt matter about format, size, or where i've saved them from. And its not a certain album, its just random pictures. It isnt the way they've saved either, because if i open them with quicktime pictureviewer, they show up fine, as they do in paint, i just dont understand it.

Heres a picture to show you what i mean.

Well I had a look around on google as a few people are having this problem.. most are just using a different program such as irfranview.
Im on win 7 so you could send one of the problem pictures to me and see if I get the same problem, which would determine whethers its yours windows 7 having some problem system files or if its the actual photoviewer.

Windows update provides a fix for this problem.

Run all the updates from www.windowsupdate.com - i cant remember from memory if its classed as an important or optional upgrade.

The other thing is, did you recently install any graphics editing software, i found the problem happened to me after I installed corel.

Mine done this last night (Vista) All i done was open the screwed image in paint or w/e and then save it as the original save name so that it overwrites. Then go to view it again and Bobs your aunty all better. :)

Just found this.... it makes sense, but I take no liability etc etc.

basically it should reset WPV again for you

Press the start button in the bottom left corner of your screen.

A start menu should pop up.

Click on "Run" on that start menu.

When the little box pops up, type this in the white part of the box:

regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

A process should start.

When that process has completed,

Click on Start, then Run... and type in:

regsvr32 /i %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

This should reinstall the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer on your computer.

(You may have to reboot after this for it to work.)

If you never sorted it, here's a solution: Download Picasa 3 from Google - It acts as a nice photo sorter and includes a viewer - It looks way nicer and acts smoother than the vista/7 one as well (Well, in my opinion anyway)(all you have to do is use the arrow keys to zoom + move back and forth effortlessly through your photos). Only downside is that you can only open one pic at once in the viewer. (and yes, I do realise the standard one can also act as a photo sorter)

I'd much rather live with one superficial problem like this than make an attempt to live with Vista!

I also have this issue, generally with images that came off my old phone camera.

Vista isn't that bad- and yeah, I've never had that problem with Picasa, even on photos that Windows Photo Gallery 'mucks up'.
(And yes - the example photo is one I took :-)

It's bloomin' awful!

Nothing is laid out in a logical manner so finding something is usually a case of use the search or spend your entire life finding that setting you want.

Not to mention every time you want to change a setting Vista thinks is even remotely important the screen blacks out and asks you if you're sure about 500 times. It's supposed to be an operating system not a nanny.

Hate it :-.

7 is lovely however, ;). Even more so when you don't have to pay for it ;D.
