Went over a very narrow speed bump yesterday. Exaust came off at the front end joint (twin joint) the clamps don't seem to be in best shape. Looking at replacing them. However was advised by a mate to look at getting join welded. Would this be ok?

:P ive done the exact same thing before man don't worry

not sure about welding though.
get some of the double style clamps from minispares and just make sure the bolt ends of the clamp aren't facing straight down otherwise it could happen again

If you weld at the 2-into-1 location you'll never be able to remove the manifold without sawing through it!
Now, I build a few rally cars and one thing you can't have is the exhaust coming off on rough roads. So I weld the Y-piece to the exhaust pipe, then clamp the 2-ended end of the Y-piee onto the down pipes with good quality clamps, making sure the clamp ends are either horizontal or vertically upwards, not downwards. As an additional fixing I drill and tap 1/4" unf holes through the 2-layers of pipe and the clamp and fit short 1/4" unf bolts through the joints actually into the pipe itself.
With additional clamps and fixings at the back the exhaust is very secure.

Thanks for that I think that is where the weld is going to go at the y piece to the exhaust. Will do me for a while. Hopefully when money less tight looking at new exhaust system...... thinking stainless steel
